OBD2 Flash Tuning Interface

CAN Plug Information

by Kevin Toped 06 Mar 2025

The L5P CAN plugs are designed to maintain the integrity of the CAN network after the removal of emissions components. These plugs feature fine terminals that are tailored to fit the factory harness, requiring extra care during installation.

Whenever installing or removing the CAN plugs, it’s essential to disconnect the vehicle’s batteries to prevent CAN communication errors.

For optimal results, make sure the contacts on the vehicle's connectors are thoroughly cleaned. We recommend using Electrical Contact Cleaner and applying Dielectric Grease during installation.

To avoid future issues, install the CAN plugs first, reconnect the batteries, and then scan for any error codes after flashing your SOTF tune. This approach ensures that if there are any connection problems, your emissions system is still in place to help clear the codes.

The black 6-pin plugs are used to replace the NOx modules that are disconnected during the removal of the factory exhaust system. For 2017-2019 models, three NOx plugs are needed, while the 2020+ models require two.

The larger 16-pin plugs (2017-2019) or 30-pin plugs (2020+) are used to replace the DEF connector. These plugs serve to keep the CAN line active once the factory modules have been removed. They can also be swapped with the factory modules for testing purposes. It’s fine to leave the DEF connector plugged in, but if the NOx modules are left in place, the sensors may fail after some time.

The NOx modules are visible during the exhaust removal process. If you are unsure, follow the sensors from the exhaust to the module, which will look like this:

To install the NOx CAN plug, connect it to the harness that was previously plugged into the connector shown on the left side of the module in the image above. One of these modules is typically located in the engine bay, near the driver-side corner of the firewall, as shown below:

Other modules are situated underneath the vehicle. For 2017-2019 models, the DEF connector is located on the passenger side frame rail, while for the 2020+ models, it can be found on the driver-side frame rail:
