Installing A New Unlocked TCM

by Kevin Toped 06 Mar 2025

Follow these steps to successfully complete an ECM or TCM swap. This process transfers essential data from the stock TCM to the replacement unit, without altering the software or segment versions on the new TCM.

Although we focus on the TCM here, the same steps apply if you're replacing the ECM. Simply choose ECM in place of TCM when prompted.

1) Begin by connecting VCM Scanner to the vehicle with the original TCM installed.

a. Navigate to “Vehicle Controls & Special Functions”

b. Select “Replace TCM” to initiate the procedure (found under System -> General)

c. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the TCM replacement for the stock unit.

2) When prompted, replace the stock TCM with the HP Tuners unlocked version.

3) Reconnect VCM Scanner to the vehicle with the new unlocked TCM installed.

a. Access “Vehicle Controls & Special Functions” again.

b. Select “Replace TCM” to start the function (found under System -> General)

c. Follow the steps to finalize the replacement process for the unlocked TCM.

4) Once the replacement is done, download the TCM read from the newly installed TCM and save the info log.

5) Submit the TCM read file and info log to us for further processing.

***Note: Depending on the software or segment version of the unlocked TCM, you may experience rough shifting issues. We recommend driving the truck a short distance (even just down your driveway or around the block). If the shifting is rough, reinstall the factory TCM until you receive the custom TCM tune from us. If shifting is smooth, you can leave the unlocked TCM installed.***
